emiko superstar in stores!
There's a nice article by Sigrid over at Fantastic Fangirls about how the Minx line was, if nothing else, an artistic success.

But you know what I really wanna mention?

EMIKO SUPERSTAR IS IN STORES NOW!!

I really like this book and I'm extremely proud of the work that Mariko and I put into it. But rather than ramble on about it, I'll just post the first five pages from the book:

YAY!!!

I'm soooo excited to see it in stores. I'm going to be carrying it around with me on my travels this month.

I'm hopefully going to have more stuff to send to you soon re the near and distant future. Maybe I'll try to get it done for my trip to Bee Cee.

Your eyesight fails you, old man. That is clearly a distant non-robotic cousin of your roboctopus. You do not have a monopoly on cephalopods!!

Hey Steve,
Just wanted to weigh in on this one. Finished Emiko last night and I wanted to congratulate you on what is a major, major accomplishment. I think this is your best work to date. From the storytelling, to the performances, to the design of both characters and setting, to the layouts and pacing, there isn't a false note or line that shouldn't be there in the whole book. I can't believe you accomplished such a dense work in the time given. I'm particularly blown away by your handling of the factory scenes; you cut no corners in creating a real environment you can practically smell. I have to admit, I photocopied several key pages and stuck them over my desk to remind me of what truly dynamic and concise staging is. I just got the new issue of Futurama via Fed EX, in which I tried to serve up the same rich, potpourri of eyeball kicks as you have in Emiko...
And all I can say is, you shame me sir.
Emiko's quite a good read, too. I was expecting some very mawkish girl-power, coming of age business-- but it's actually a carefully spun tale, with some real insight and frankness. The awkward parts of life aren't glossed over, and the repercussions to the concept of living in the moment ring true. I also like that Mariko delved into the Warhol history, and what the original definition of a superstar was. This is why I lent the term to the title of my own comic examining the luster of fame; back in the day Warhol had ambitions to make Morrison his next superstar, but he would never really achieve that status until after his death. Nowadays, no such sacrifices are needed-- superstardom is ubiquitous (of course, all this is important to noone but me).
Anyways, this one should serve you in good stead for along time to come. I hope you're recognized next year come the Shusters, or Ignatzes, or what have you. Until then, why not come down to Pat's Pub tomorrow night? There's a halloween art show at eight, bands at ten, and drinks whenever you like. I'll have two pieces present, and many women will be there in costume showing off THEIR two... Oh, never mind. Byah!

Thanks, man. Your compliments make me warm & fuzzy & uncomfortable. My main goal on Emiko was to do justice to the script and characters, which I think I did. I'm glad you dug it.

I hope your show was a good one. I'll have to catch up with you some other time.

Hey, I live to make people uncomfortable (but they really should stop giving me their keys). I might have been laying it on a bit thick, but what can I say-- I always get jazzed whenever someone I know extends above and beyond themselves and thus perishes.
The show had a good turnout, but I would have liked to have seen it at another venue, 'cause there were a lot of good pieces that deserve a look-see from more than just the bar crowd. It's up again this week Halloween night (in conjunction with a saucy burlesque show) at the same pub if you're looking for a place to haunt. Have a good one.
